The Project
With the project “Late lessons from early warnings – Applying the precautionary principle to knowledge for action” we build on the experiences from the report 'Late Lessons from early warnings: the precautionary principle, 1896-2000' (EEA, 2001) and want to expand and broaden the coverage of case studies which will enable us to improve our understanding of the generation, communication and use of scientific information in policy development. Information from this project will help the EU and European Environment Agency (EEA) member countries to frame and identify sound and effective policies that protect the environment and contribute to sustainable development in states of scientific uncertainties. Providing such information is the regulatory duty of the EEA, an independent Agency of the European Community established in 1993 to supply information to the policy-making bodies of the EU and its Member States (Council Regulations, 1210/90 and 993/99).
Main outputs
The project goes beyond the “mere” production of a “Late lessons” Volume 2. Instead, the a number of outputs are expected:
Further "Late Lessons" reports;
A web-based “Late Lessons from early warnings” portal and online interest group to disseminate key messages and facilitate the exchange of information, knowledge building, stakeholder consultation and debate.
A collection of case studies;
A series of workshops and symposia;
A network: Based on the contributors and other interested parties a community shall be fostered that develops and shares the information in this field and moves it from knowledge to action.
